-What are some of the characteristics of influential communicators?
Colin Powell – persuasiveness, global view, roots/history that are relatable to the general public
Shelly Lazurus – god management of personal and professional life, reiteration “I don’t think you can ever communicate too much”, accountability
Jack Welch – using strategy – “focus, execution, and people” to communicate and lead.
- What negatively impacts communication?
Not ensuring that the message sticks – communicating but making sure the audience knows what to do with the information once it has been communicated.
Not engaging the audience which can occur by seeming unprepared, boring, dishonest or unaware of who your audience is. Failing to live your message or connect with your audience either one-on-one or in a large group.
- How can a leader ensure they are hearing the bad news as well as the good news?
Listen, listen listen! Make sure that the people reporting to you are doing the right things instead of saying the right things (like George Marshall).
- How can a leader ensure a message sticks?
Give your listener(s) a take-away, check for understanding with a brief-back and continue to echo the message in future communications while living the message.
- What steps can you take to overcome objections with your message?
Determine what the objection is, acknowledge the issue, empathize, relate with the audience by reminding them of a shared experience, deliver the message and leave the door open for compromise. Allow for dialogue and allow for an opportunity to build a relationship by not closing the door on people and their messages.
- What strategies can you use to be sure the audience is engaged?
Ask questions that require actual answers, and dialogue, be authentic and aware of how you look/sound and give some sticking points that you can follow up with (when possible)
.
- What does it mean to be an authentic presenter?
Authentic presenters know the mood of the audience, take cues from the audience and adjust their presentations accordingly. They act the part but don’t take themselves so seriously that they can’t joke and engage with their audience and get on other people’s level.
