- What are some of the characteristics of influential communicators?
An influential communicator constructs a message which is clear and concise. Tailoring the content and medium of delivery are extremely important in order to make the message resonate most with the audience. These tactics also play a strong role in building trust and the relationship with the audience. Explaining the audience’s relation to the message and involving them in a solution if applicable allows the audience to take ownership of how the content might affect them and commitment (14).
- What negatively impacts communication?
Some of the factors which negatively affect communication are having an unclear message, seeming unauthentic or untruthful and overpromising. This are all factors that long term work against building a relationship, trust and commitment from the audience.
- How can a leader ensure they are hearing the bad news as well as the good news?
A good way a leader can encourage staff to share good and bad news with him/ her is by soliciting negative and positive feedback on an ongoing basis and showing receptiveness. This accomplishes two things, it makes the leader more approachable by facilitating more frequent contact between the leader and staff as well as promoting an active culture of providing feedback (60).
- How can a leader ensure a message sticks?
A leader can ensure the message sticks by engaging the audience. This can be done making sure the message is well prepared and researched, appeals to the audience’s emotions and engages the audience by facilitating interaction with the audience during or after the delivery (128-129). Engagement is a way to listen actively as well as encourage the audience to be involved and take ownership of a response or in constructing a solution.
- What steps can you take to overcome objections with your message?
One of the best ways to overcome objections is to anticipate what possible objections might be and use them to influence how the message is delivered or to be prepared to respond should they come up. If this is not possible or unanticipated objections come up, a few steps that can be followed include acknowledging the objection and empathizing, reminding the audience of similar shared experiences, delivering the message and opening the door for a compromise (101-102).
- What strategies can you use to be sure the audience is engaged?
Strategies that can be used to engage the audience are: stimulating the intellect, appealing to the emotions and engaging the body (129).
- What does it mean to be an authentic presenter?
Being an authentic presenter is being believable in the manner of presenting and in the credulity of the content. Being “yourself” is a good starting point but also being able to take cues from the audience and respond to their mood while delivering a message will resonate with them. It is alright to use quotes from leaders but copying their gestures can be perceived as being unauthentic. Projecting a natural manner of speaking and confidence is important or acting the part and also adding humor so that you can lighten the mood and show that you don’t take yourself seriously are important strategies (109-110).
