What are some of the characteristics of influential communicators?
The characteristics that stuck out the most for me were authenticity in communication (Chapter 8) and the importance of story telling(Chapter 12)--great communicators not only use media to communicate, they use their commitment to the message as evidenced by their behavior. Great communicators also use a narrative to connect with their audience, the narrative establishes a connection with the audience, sets the basis for trust and empathy.
What negatively impacts communication?
There are many things that can negatively impact communication. These include poor preparation (Chapter 8), selecting the wrong method for communicating--i.e. using email to deliver a message that should be given in person, and a lack of reinforcement(chapter 4) --your message can be lost, forgotten or misinterpreted if you don't consistently repeat and reinforce it.
- How can a leader ensure they are hearing the bad news as well as the good news?
Leaders can ensure they hear bad news as well as good news by listening and creating an environment that encourages questions and open communications. Additionally when leaders themselves are open about their own mistakes, they create this type of environment.
- How can a leader ensure a message sticks?
Don't abandon your message, weave it into everything you do, ensure your behavior is in accordance with your message, reinforce it through your actions. Use multiple forms to communicate and reinforce your message--follow a meeting up with an email. Open a meeting revisiting your mission, display your values prominently.
- What steps can you take to overcome objections with your message?
Know your audience and anticipating how they might feel, you don't need to develop responses in advance, but you should be prepared to listen and be honest in your response.
- What strategies can you use to be sure the audience is engaged?
Develop an authentic, targeted presentations that utilizes story telling will help to draw you audience in. You can also involve the audience, ask questions, tell jokes, listen to their responses.

An authentic presenter is someone who establishes credibility with the audience (chapter 8). You can do this by living your message--i.e. Mother Teresa or utilizing empathy to connect with your audience--i.e. Bill Clinton.
