- What are some of the characteristics of influential communicators?
• Expert- The first type of leadership communicator is the expert or the keeper of the mission. The expert holds to organization’s mission- what the organization is and how it conducts business.
• Visionary- The second of leadership communicator is what we call the visionary. Visionary are those leaders whose ardent belief in their cause outweighs their words.
• Coach- The third type of leadership communicator is a combination of previous two- part visionary, part expert. The coach is a collaborator, the one who is called upon by virtue of her or his expertise in a particular subject.
• Transformers- the fourth type of leadership communicator is again one part visionary, another part expert, but this individual leans toward the visionary. He or she is the transformer: The mission is to persuade- to change minds. They know where they want to take their people, and they apply their selling skills to convince people to come along with them.
- What negatively impacts communication?
• This is an example of a situation where speaker and message do not intersect; there is a lack of credibility.
• In the absence of words from a leader; people will create their own messages, typically in the form of rumor; innuendo, and gossip.
- How can a leader ensure they are hearing the bad news as well as the good news?
• Put the people at ease
• Make a habit of asking, at least, three employees a week how they view the business.
• Eat lunch with employees at least once a week
• Conduct communication survey/audit to assess the climate of the organization.

• People need to see that you care about what you are doing and what you are communicating.
