My choice for a good communicator would be John Wooden. It wasn’t about a final score or winning or losing. It was about the hard work and effort put in by each person in the journey. Mr. Wooden created a “Pyramid of Success”. I think too often we are set on having to win and lose sight of the important areas of success that are needed to get to the end of each journey. Ten words held the sides of the pyramid together. Words such as ambition, honesty, integrity. He was able to teach young minds the meaning of success through patience, faith, loyalty and cooperation. Much of his success was the understanding that we must improve ourselves in order to improve the team. We cannot concern ourselves with who gets the credit. One of Mr. Wooden’s quotes is “Goals achieved with little effort are seldom worthwhile or lasting.” This quote resonates with me because too often we tend to move quickly with our goals not stopping to fully understand the goal and what we really want to achieve from it. Effort is the key to making us successful. Working with my direct reports to have a full understanding of achieving success is through improving ourselves and putting our best effort into everything we do.
