Was it difficult to craft the message? Why or why not?
Yes, it was difficult crafting the message, especially thinking about delivering the bad news in the context of the division having a year of great performance. This could be received as the making the staff feel that despite how they perform, their work is not recognized and there is instability.
What were the factors you considered while crafting your message?
I was considering what might different reactions and concerns be from the staff hearing the message and what would my own reactions be if I was in their shoes. Following I thought about how could I tailor the message to recognize those reactions with empathy, be transparent but also provide words of encouragement and possible mechanism for overcoming the challenges presented.
What were the factors you considered about delivering this message?
The first factor I considered was what the best mode of communicating the message and I decided that delivering the message in person would best. This would allow me to view the audience and gage the reactions and be able to react or adjust my message appropriately. I also think that while the staff might be concerned they would appreciate having the message presented in person and would respect and trust the leader more when he/she faces both positive and negative communication in person.

Very thoughtful answers Ayia--delivering complicated, difficult messages is one of the real challenges of leadership. And in the current challenging economic times for non profits -- these kinds of messages come more often. An important skill to hone.

Aiya one thing I didn't totally factor in was what the different reactions might be. Although I had a sense of what they might be I think in messages like this that need to be delivered it's really important to consider this and the best way to respond to this.
I also said an in person delivery but I like that you mentioned you wanted to gage the reactions of the audience so you can adjust appropriately. This is totally spot on and necessary! I also think it will allow you to know what the reaction and chatter will be after that message is given.
