Was it difficult to craft the message? Why or why not?
Yes, it is always difficult to craft a message that has negative implications or is bad news. You only have one shot to make a first impression, and only one chance to "break the news" to someone. It is important to be thoughtful about how your message may be received.
What were the factors you considered while crafting your message?
I considered how I would feel hearing the message. I considered how to have the lasting impression be one of hope and not one of fear, at least to the best of my ability. I considered the language used, and the precise way the news of the contract loss would be described.
What were the factors you considered about delivering this message?
Since I would deliver it in person, I think it's important to consider your tone and your own reactions. A leader needs to be calm in the face of uncertainty, so I would model the behavior I wanted to see from staff. I would be calm and collected, but also honest and transparent. I would have an even tone, but a positive and reassuring voice.

Good points, Lauren. It is definitely true that the same message can be interpreted very differently if delivered in different ways (tone, demeanor, etc). Calm and reassuring, as best as you can be, is a great way to go.
